This is a peer mentor program and a guide for facilators that is focused on communcation skills amoung peers, supervisors and staff from other deparatments. It was developed under an Extended Care Career Lader Initiative (ECCLI) grant from the MA Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, administered by Commonwealth Corporation.

 


Communication Skills for a Respectful Workplace - Participant Handouts

These handouts are an accompaniment to the peer mentor program (a guide for facilators), that are focused on communication skills amoung peers, supervisors and staff from other departments. This course provides an introduction to ArchiCAD, a 3-D architectural modeling and BIM (Building Information Management) software program.

This course explores the methods and equipment to improve the energy efficiency of existing and new structures.

 


Extreme Insulations Retrofits (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course examines the science and techniques of super insulating existing homes to reduce significantly heating energy requirements in an environmentally sound manner.

 


Fundamentals of Electricity (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course provides an introduction to electricity with an emphasis on sustainable energy applications.

 


Fundamentals of Wind Energy (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course provides an introduction to the practice and theory of wind electric generation.

This course examines the basic principles of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC).

This course provides students with the theoretical basis for understanding the various types of solar electric systems.

Jobs in Boating Marine Trades Basic Certificate Course

This 45 hour non-credit curriculum results in certification by the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association.

 


Passive Solar Technology (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course examines the history, science and implementation of passive solar technologies to offset heating, hot water and lighting needs for a house and commercial / industrial buildings.

 


Photovoltaic (Solar Electric) Installation (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course examines the practical skills needed to install utility-connected and off-grid Photovoltaic (PV) systems.

 


Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency Certificate & Associate's Degree

These programs offer a wide range of courses to prepare participants for entry level employment opportunities in the RE/EE field. All syllabi developed with WCTF funds are included.

 


Residential Construction Fundamentals (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course provides an introduction to residential construction techniques with an emphasis on basic construction skills.

 


Residential Energy Efficiency & Energy Auditing (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course explores the methods and the skills required to perform energy audits of residential buildings.

 


Solar Domestic Hot Water (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course examines solar hot water systems for heating water for residences.

 


Solar Thermal Systems (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course examines solar water heating for domestic hot water, house heating, swimming pool heating, process heating and electrical generation.

 


Sustainable Design and Green Building Practices (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course investigates sustainable design and green building techniques and how they may be synthesized to best fit a specific construction project.

 


Sustainable Landscape Design & Energy (RE/EE Certificate & Associate's Degree)

This course explores the fundamentals of landscape design with particular attention to integrating both existing and new buildings sustainably into their landscapes.

 


Culturally Responsive Teaching in the DYS Classroom

DYS has developed a set of instructional guides to support effective teaching in residential programs that, and beginning in 2007, the Guides have included a chapter on Culturally Responsive Teaching. The CRT chapter is based on research and best practices from national experts in the field of multi-cultural education as well as social justice and equity teachings. The framework for CRT has provided a foundation of work for professional development for educators, management personnel and staff connected to the DYS Comprehensive Education Partnership.

 


Roots Up Training Program-Spanish Translation of Handouts

Roots Up Green Job Training is a 21 week program to prepare participants to work as entry level assistants to a solar hot water installation crew or weatherization crew. It can also be used as a sustainable energy introduction for students who are interested in other related careers. Positive Youth Development Approach in DYS Educational Programs

Positive youth development (PYD) is an approach to working with and educating youth that integrates multiple areas of growth and development - physical, cognitive, social, emotional, cultural, civic, and vocational - with education. This inter-disciplinary approach to working with youth focuses on building on a young person's assets in order to: 1) Strengthen their beliefs in their own abilities 2) Support them in developing a sense of identity and connections with others, and 3) Build a sense of control over future outcomes in their own lives.

 


Construction Workforce Training Program

This 11 lesson curriculum orients participants to union construction trades and prepares them to apply to an apprenticeship program.

Empower Your Future: The Massachusetts Department of Youth Services Bridging the Opportunity Gap Career Readiness Curriculum Guide

Empower Your Future is a life skills, career development and employability curriculum training guide developed for use by program staff of the DYS Bridging the Opportunity Gap Initiative with participating youth to further develop the essential work and life skills necessary for personal and family self-sufficiency. This guide is just one of the many resources the Department has developed to further its goal of providing education, social-emotional and employability skills to support personal and professional achievement for its clients. The Massachusetts Department of Youth Services believes this Guide has reached beyond the scope of DYS clients and can be utilized by educators and program staff who are committed to enhancing education, employment and positive outcomes for youth across the Commonwealth.

 


Arithmetic and Algebra Review Course for College Students

This Intensive Arithmetic and Algebra review course is offered to students as a prep course after they take the initial ACCUPLACER exam and before a retake. It is intended for students who previously learned Algebra and want to enroll in a college math course. COURSE IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS: • Who have previously learned the materials, but need a refresher course • Who desire to retake the placement exam

 


Combination: Fundamentals of Writing and English Composition

This combination course, designed for students whose placement test scores in English inserted them into English 100 but are high enough to suggest strong potential for success in a shortened and accelerated review of the skills taught in that course. In this course designed as a “two-in-one” hybridization, students may acquire these skills necessary for doing successful work in ENG100 in four or five weeks and may then move to a study of ENG101 during the following ten weeks, allowing them to meet the requirements for both courses in one semester.

 


Enhanced Clinical Skills for Medical Assistants

This 5 session course will enhance existing skills and build the knowledge of Medical Assistants to prepare them for a specialized career at a community health center. Topics include: Revenue Enhancement, Clinical Reasoning, Emergency Skills, Instrument Identification and Colposcopy prep. The course was developed as a product of the Healthcare Skills Gap grant by the Central MA Community Health Center Partnership.

 


Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst Curriculum

The Building Analyst training is a component of the Energy Efficiency Technician Apprenticeship Program (EETAP), a registered apprenticeship program developed by the Asian American Civic Association to train certified energy efficiency professionals. The main component of the program is a one-year apprenticeship that combines 2,200 hours of on-the-job training with approximately 182.5 hours of classroom instruction.

These 5 courses were developed by Holyoke Community College to create a Renewable Energy Technology Certificate Program.

This twelve-module on-line course is designed to update construction industry professionals, high school / vocational educators and consumers about the status of emerging energy systems and the recent evolution of building and infrastructure design.

 


Green Engineering Concentration

These 7 courses were developed by Western New England College to integrate green engineering theory and practice into their Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering concentration prepares individuals to develop new and efficient ways to collect energy from renewable sources. The Electrical Engineering Green Concentration prepares individuals to convert energy from renewable sources into useable electricity.

 


Alzheimer's Care (Student Manual)

This is the student manual that accompanies the Alzheimer's Care Trainer's Manual. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with the latest information on Alzheimer's disease to help successfully care for the person with the disease and their family members.

Bridges to Healthcare Curriculum

This series of lessons was developed to prepare non-native speakers of English and/or pre-GED or GED students for a Certified Nursing Assistant certification course and/or prepare for developmental courses in the healthcare field. The lessons were developed with the intention of exposing students to vocabulary and classrooms systems typical of the community college setting.

 


Restorative Care (Student Manual)

This is the student manual that accompanies the Trainer Manual Restorative Care. The purpose of this manual is to develop the special sets of skills that allow you to advance your knowledge. This growth further enhances your ability to be more involved with the person you are caring for, their family and other team members.

This Overview and Module Descriptions document provides a road map for the Empower Your Future Curriculum Guide. The modules contain condensed scope and sequences culled from the Guide that are designed for shorter-term youth employment programs focused on work-readiness skill development and career exploration.

 


Essential Skills for the Health Professional

A 3-credit course intended to prepare students for entry into a healthcare certificate or degree program. It includes an introduction to healthcare careers along with resume and interview skills workshops. Students complete CPR and First Aid Certification as part of the course.

 


Clinical Lab Science Associate Degree

These new courses were developed to create a Clinical Lab Science Program at Bunker Hill Community College.

 


13 Management Effective Tools

This curriculum, which includes an introduction to 13 management tools, was developed for use in practicum sessions after participants had attended front line management training classes packaged by National Graduate School and delivered in modular form.

 


Employment Options Certified Peer Specialist Training Program

Employment Options, in partnership with their collaborative of human service providers and The Transformation Center, developed an occupational training program and workforce pathway for participants to become Certified Peer Specialists (CPS).
