劳动力培训基金计划通过向马萨诸塞州的企业提供资源来资助当前和新聘员工的培训,从而帮助提高企业生产力和竞争力。 In order for the Massachusetts economy to prosper, our businesses need access to a pipeline of skilled workers so they can stay competitive and continue to grow.

Team Spotlight: Tom McGee
Today, we’re spotlighting the Senior Program Manager for the Workforce Training Fund Program, Tom McGee. Tom brings a passion for public service and capacity building to his role. Tom supports Massachusetts businesses throughout the entire grant process, helping them invest in their workforce and improve productivity. When he’s not reviewing grants, he enjoys spending time with his toddler daughter and reading murder mysteries.
Q: Can you describe your role as a Senior Program Manager for the 劳动力培训基金计划?
A: I try to be a friendly voice/face of an extremely unique grant funding opportunity for businesses across Massachusetts. I do this by supporting businesses throughout the entire grant management process. This starts with the application review process, all the way through the closure of the two-year grant itself.
Q: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about the Workforce Training Fund Program?
A: The main determiner of eligibility is if your business makes regular payments to the Massachusetts unemployment system. The grant supports a wide range of businesses in the state. Every month, I learn about new businesses that are based in Massachusetts, from Parker Brothers’ board games to companies that make parts for NASA.
Q: Is there a success story that’s stuck with you—something that really shows the impact of the program?
A: A restaurant I worked with set aside 4 hours a week to train their back of house staff on English Language proficiency for a total of 80 hours. Over a dozen of their employees were able to transition to front-of-house staff because of the training. The business was able to fill open positions internally, while the employees received an increase in salary because of the training.
Q: What did you want to be when you grew up—and how does that compare to what you do now?
A: I grew up wanting to run for political office as crazy as that sounds. I believe in service and get so much joy out of being student body president all throughout Middle school (running unopposed) that I thought maybe there was a future in it! My passion for service was channeled into capacity building here at the Commonwealth Corporation. I truly enjoy the opportunity to show the value that the State Government can bring to the business community.

Q: What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long week of reviewing grant applications?
A: Well, currently, I have a four-month-old toddler who has taken up all my extra time not spent at my desk. She is an absolute joy, and I love seeing the world through her eyes. In the times she is sleeping, though, I am an avid reader and have spent a good chunk of my limited free time on Murder Mysteries currently.
