Team Spotlight: Maggie Aleksova
In this post, we’re highlighting Maggie Aleksova, Senior Talent Management Specialist at Commonwealth Corporation. Maggie plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations of our Human Resources department. From supporting recruitment and onboarding processes to maintaining employee records, Maggie brings consistency, care, and excellence to every aspect of her work. Her ability to manage multiple responsibilities while staying people-focused makes her a key part of our team—and a trusted resource across the organization.
Q: What initially inspired you to pursue a career in human resources, and what continues to excite you about it?
A: My story is a bit different. When I arrived in the U.S. from Bulgaria 12 years ago, I didn’t speak English and had no office experience. But I started English classes at the YMCA, and they saw something in me. They supported me in applying for a professional program in Banking and Insurance, which included an internship. The only available internship was at the YMCA of Greater Boston in Human Resources. During my interview, they asked me, ‘Where do you see yourself in five years?’ I was very direct and told them, ‘I don’t see myself here, but I’ll give you my best for the next 8 weeks.’ I’ll never forget the look on their faces!
Not only did I land the internship, but I was the first-ever intern there to be paid. Afterward, I was kept on as a contractor and then hired full-time, where I spent 7 years learning and growing. It wasn’t easy, but each challenge taught me valuable lessons that shaped my career. What excites me about my career is that I have the opportunity to work with great people and support them. Positively impacting someone is the greatest reward that a job can offer.
Q: What does a typical day in your role look like, and what are some of the most fulfilling or challenging aspects?
A: My days are always filled with a sense of excitement and unpredictability. There’s never a dull moment, and no two days are ever quite the same. The variety keeps things fresh and interesting, though it can be a bit hectic. The real challenge lies in managing a packed schedule, juggling multiple responsibilities, and finding enough time to accomplish it all.
Q: How would you describe the culture of CommCorp, and how do you contribute to shaping it?
A: The culture here is positive and steadily improving. As for my contribution to that, I always strive to remain professional, supportive, and kind in all situations. I believe that small, consistent efforts can help foster a better environment for everyone.
Q: What initiatives or projects are you most proud of that have positively impacted the organization or employees?
A: I’m really excited about the improvements made in the recruitment process. We’re now filling positions within 4-6 weeks, which is considered pretty fast. Another project I’m incredibly proud of—though still in progress—is the implementation of a new system. It’s a significant amount of work on the backend, in addition to our daily responsibilities, but I truly believe it will make all of our lives easier once it’s completed. All the hard work and stress are definitely worth it, knowing the positive impact it will have in the future.
Q: Is there a piece of advice you would give someone starting their career in HR or looking to get into the field?
A: After every storm, there will be sunshine.
