The Skill Up program is a workforce development initiative that supports youth involved with the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services by connecting them to education, employment, and skill-building opportunities through regional partnerships with employers and training providers.

Team Spotlight: India Hill

Today, we’re spotlighting a dedicated member of the Skill Up team, India Hill, who serves on the Employer Outreach Specialist for the Western Region. With nearly two years at Commonwealth Corporation, India supports justice-involved youth by connecting them to internships, employment, and career exploration opportunities. Inspired by lived experiences, she is passionate about helping young people access second chances and build the confidence and skills needed to pursue a better future.

Q: How long have you been with CommCorp’s Skill Up team, and what’s your current role?

A: I have been a CommCorp for almost 2 years in May. I’m currently the Employer Outreach Specialist for the Western Region.

Q: Please explain what your program does, and how you might explain it to a young person?

A: Our program supports justice-involved youth in building career readiness skills through hands-on experience and employer engagement. We offer opportunities such as market employment, internships, job shadowing, and informational sessions with professionals from high-demand industries in our region. When speaking with youth, we emphasize that our goal is to help them gain the tools to build a better future, if they’re committed to growth and positive change.

Q: What inspired you to join Skill Up, and how do you see the program influencing young people across the state?

A: I was inspired to join Skill Up because of my personal life experiences. Growing up, I saw many people become incarcerated, often due to systemic issues like lack of employment, housing, and food. I was drawn to this program and DYS because they offer a second chance to individuals who are too often overlooked. SkillUp provides the resources and support needed to change the trajectory of someone’s life. Through my work here, I’ve seen youth overcome unimaginable circumstances and take real steps toward a better future with help from our team and DYS.

Q: What’s one skill or value you hope every young person takes away from working with Skill Up staff?

A: I hope the skill they take away is the confidence to ask for help. Many people find themselves in difficult situations simply because they don’t know what resources are available or that there are people who care. Reaching out for support instead of resorting to extremes can open doors to new options, even if the path takes a little longer. Knowing when and how to ask for help is a powerful step toward lasting change.

Q: What advice would you give someone starting out in their career?

A: Always stay curious and ask questions. The more you understand about what you’re doing, the better prepared and more confident you’ll be in your work.
