Staff Spotlight: CJ Bones, Senior Manager, Operational Systems

Today, we are spotlighting Senior Operational Systems Manager CJ Bones! As Senior Operational Systems Manager at Commonwealth Corporation, CJ Bones helps ensure the technology, processes, and data supporting our workforce development program operate efficiently and effectively. With a background in workforce development and a passion for problem-solving, CJ brings a thoughtful, strategic approach to improving systems, streamlining workflows, making informed decisions, and better serving communities across Massachusetts.

Q: Can you tell us about your role as Senior Operational Systems Manager and what your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

A: As Senior Operational Systems Manager, I help ensure that the technology, processes, and data that power CommCorp's programs work together effectively. Much of my role centers around the administration and strategic management of our CRM, where I oversee system architecture, governance, modernization efforts, application development, and reporting.

On any given day, I might be meeting with Innovation and Program teams to understand their business needs, designing solutions, building and testing application forms, creating reports, or evaluating opportunities to improve how we collect and use data. A big part of my work is balancing immediate needs with long-term goals. There are often many ways to solve a problem, but I focus on identifying solutions that support our future roadmap and maintain the integrity of our data, even when they may require more planning upfront. I also spend time creating documentation, establishing best practices, and assessing our systems to recommend improvements that help CommCorp operate more efficiently and effectively.

Q: What interested you in operational systems and process management work?

A: I've always enjoyed solving puzzles and finding ways to make complicated processes simpler and more efficient. Operational systems work combines technology, strategy, and problem-solving in a way that allows me to make a meaningful impact across the organization.

What I find especially rewarding is that the work sits at the intersection of people, processes, and technology. Every project is different, and there's always an opportunity to improve experience, reduce manual work, or provide better information for decision-making. I enjoy translating complex business needs into practical solutions and collaborating with teams on thoughtful system design.

I'm also passionate about creating systems and processes that reduce friction and make work easier for others. Clear operations and efficient workflows allow teams to spend less time reacting to problems and more time focusing on strategic initiatives, innovation, and mission-driven work that has the greatest impact.

A big part of that is designing solutions that feel intuitive and user-friendly. While documentation and training materials are important, I believe the best systems provide guidance through the experience itself, helping users complete tasks accurately and confidently without relying heavily on external instructions. When thoughtful design, clear processes, and the right technology come together, teams can spend less time troubleshooting and more time delivering results.

Q: How do the systems and processes you manage help support CommCorp teams and programs?

A: In the immediate sense, I support CommCorp teams by creating, troubleshooting, and maintaining application forms and system processes that provide applicants with a user-friendly experience while managing the complex data mapping happening behind the scenes. This ensures that information is captured accurately and routed to the right places within our CRM, making it easier for teams to review applications, manage grants, and make informed decisions.

The systems and processes I manage also help provide reliable data for reporting and analysis. Whether responding to compliance requests, supporting legislative presentations, highlighting grantee success stories, or helping leadership understand program impact, accurate data plays an important role in telling the story of the work being done across the Commonwealth. By building strong operational foundations, we enable teams to spend less time managing information and more time focusing on program outcomes.

Q: What is one challenge or accomplishment in your role that has been especially rewarding?

A: One of the most rewarding challenges has been helping guide CommCorp's ongoing modernization efforts. As organizations grow, systems and processes naturally evolve, and it's easy for complexity to build over time. Being able to step back, evaluate how things are working, and design solutions that can better support the organization in the future has been both challenging and fulfilling.

A recent example is helping lead the planning and design of a major modernization initiative for our grant management systems. Much of the work happens before anyone sees the final product. It involves understanding how different teams operate, identifying where processes create friction, and designing solutions that will support the organization's goals for years to come. The work also benefits from my background in workforce development and familiarity with state workforce systems, which helps ensure we're building solutions that align with current requirements while remaining adaptable to future policy, programmatic, and reporting needs. I enjoy the challenge of connecting those pieces and helping create a roadmap that balances immediate needs with long-term sustainability.

Q: Fall is here! What are some of your favorite fall activities?

A: I’m located in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains, where there’s no shortage of world-class fall foliage and seasonal activities. My family and I enjoy spending our weekends exploring many of the area's cultural and historic attractions, including The Mount, Edith Wharton’s former summer estate; the Norman Rockwell Museum; MASS MoCA; and The Clark Art Institute. One of our favorite annual traditions is visiting Naumkeag for its Great Pumpkin Show.

No fall outing is complete without a stop for something warm to drink. We often end the day with a comforting cup of Serious Hot Chocolate from Chocolate Springs, our local chocolatier, or a steaming cup of hot apple cider from one of the fantastic orchards scattered throughout the Berkshires. Fall is a special time of year out here, and there’s always something beautiful to see or experience.
